Is Carfax Worth It in 2026? When to Pay and When to Skip It

Short answer: Carfax is worth around $45 when you are down to one car and its maintenance history matters. It is not worth it for screening several cars, or when the dealer already gives you a free copy. For screening, a cheaper report covers title, salvage, odometer and theft records for a fraction of the price.

What you pay for with Carfax

Carfax charges around $45 for one report, about $65 for three and about $100 for five. Its report draws on what it describes as more than 151,000 sources, and its distinctive strength is service records: oil changes, tire rotations, brake and transmission work and safety inspections reported by shops.

When Carfax is worth it

  • You are down to one car and want the fullest picture before paying.
  • Maintenance decides the deal, for example a high-mileage car, a European model with costly service, or a car with a known transmission or engine weak spot.
  • You are buying privately and the seller has no service records on paper.

When to skip it

  • The dealer already gives you one. Many dealer listings include a free Carfax link. Ask first.
  • You are still comparing cars. Checking five cars at Carfax prices costs about $100. A cheaper report or pack screens the shortlist for a fraction of that; buy Carfax only for the finalist if service history matters.
  • Your main worry is title fraud, salvage or theft. These records come from states, insurers and NICB, and lower-cost providers carry them too. See our stolen car check guide.

What no report shows

No vehicle history report, Carfax included, shows damage that was never reported. The federal NMVTIS disclaimer says the system does not contain detailed repair history, and that significant damage may be missing when no insurer or state declared a total loss. Pay an independent mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection on the car you choose. Our inspection checklist covers what to ask for.

Questions people ask

How much does a Carfax report cost?

Around $45 for one report, about $65 for three and about $100 for five, as of October 2026. Check Carfax's site for current pricing.

Can I get a Carfax report for free?

Often, yes. Many dealer listings include a free Carfax report. Ask the seller before paying for one.

Is a cheaper vehicle history report as good as Carfax?

For title brands, salvage, total loss, odometer and theft records, cheaper reports draw on similar public and insurer data. Carfax's main advantage is service and maintenance records reported by shops.

Does any report show all accidents?

No. Damage that was never reported to an insurer, police or a state agency will not appear in any report. A pre-purchase inspection is the only way to find it.
